North Caldwell New Jersey

History of North Caldwell New Jersey

North Caldwell, New Jersey is a suburb of New York City and is located in Essex County. New Jersey Monthly Magazine rated the town as one of the Top 10 Best Places to Live, giving it the number ten slot. This family-friendly town wasn’t always so well recognized, however. North Caldwell was once part of the Horseneck Tract, which was an area that included the towns of Caldwell, Fairfield, Verona and others. This area of land was called Horseneck Tract because the land was in the shape of a horse’s neck and head.

In 1702, settlers purchased 14,000 acres of land from a Native American tribe. The goods were equal to $325 and included much of the western portion of Essex County. In the late 1800s, sections of Caldwell Township were incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. This new portion of land was called North Caldwell as we know it today. In 1982, North Caldwell became a township and was able to take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies that allowed the town to generate revenue.

Today, North Caldwell is a borough, which was effective January 1, 1992. This is a type of New Jersey government that is used in many municipalities across the state. Nearly 90 percent of residents are Caucasian, with the median age being 43 years. The census in 2010 showed a population of 6,183. This area is extremely wealthy and consistently ranked as one of the wealthiest towns in the country.
